Jubilee "Yellowing": an unforgettable farewell to the university 09. May. 2025

About 550 students graduated this spring from the Faculty of Economics and Business and the Faculty of Agriculture, Food Science and Environmental Management. Therefore, the traditional Sárgulás event was dedicated to them and their achievements during the first week of May at the Böszörményi úti campus of the University of Debrecen. 450 of them dressed up in traditional clothes and boarded horse-drawn carriages on Friday in order to say goodbye to the city and the university ahead of the upcoming final exams.

There were more than forty chariots and horse-drawn carriages on Friday moving from the Böszörményi úti campus to the main square of Debrecen, where they were welcomed by Dániel Barcza, a representative of the municipal self-government of our city, following which the deans of the two faculties, Veronika Fenyves and László Stündl, addressed the graduating students. Dóra Csenge Becsky then gave a speech on behalf of the graduates.

This year, the graduates of the Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Economics and Business prepared for their "Yellowing" with a Hortobágy-inspired choreography to say farewell to the city of Debrecen with this dance performed in front of the building of Great Church. As a surprise, Vice Rector Károly Pető and the two Deans Veronika Fenyves and László Stündl, together with Vice Dean Szilvia Veres, also joined the crowd of dancers on the occasion of the 50th anniversary.

In front of the Main Building of the University of Debrecen, the students were welcomed by Rector Zoltán Szilvássy and Chancellor Zoltán Bács.

“It is indeed a great privilege for me to be here, as what we call Sárgulás is one of the most honorable traditions of Hungarian student life. It is not by chance that agricultural and economic sciences are here together at the University of Debrecen. When the first university unit of agricultural sciences was founded, these disciplines were complemented by veterinary medicine, and this trio is now united with all the characteristic features of crop production, animal husbandry and water management,” said Rector Zoltán Szilvássy.

Chancellor Zoltán Bács also addressed the graduates, recalling his personal memories of going to university as well as the experiences of the past days.

“Back in 1993, I also took part in the activities associated with Sárgulás. However, we were far fewer in number then: there were five hundred students and 150 teachers altogether on the Böszörményi úti campus at that time. Today, there are about eight thousand students at these two faculties and about three hundred lecturers and instructors. That is to say, there are many more of us now, yet the week's activities so far, including yesterday's Teachers' Evening in the theater, is a clear indication of how important the sense of solidarity for us is now. I hope that you will recall these memories in 20 or 30 years' time, or even in 50 years' time, just as we do it to this very day. Remember that we look forward to seeing you come back to your alma mater at any time,” said Chancellor Zoltán Bács to the graduates.

On behalf of the Student Self-Government, Flóra Fodor said goodbye to the more than four hundred graduating students.

The graduates then started to dance again on the square called University Square, creating a frenetic atmosphere, inviting the university leaders to join their dance of joy following the ever popular Hortobágy composition.

Following the joint dance, a spectacular horse show was performed, to be concluded, as tradition has it, by the ceremony of korsóavatás [inauguration of the mugs] on the Böszörményi Road campus.

The week-long program of events was rounded off with the graduates’ prom night.
