Vocational training for automotive engineering students at Debrecen’s BMW Group Factory 20. May. 2025

At the BMW Training Center, 41 students of the Faculty of Technology of the University of Debrecen (UD) majoring in the automotive engineering specialization of the BSc program spent 4 weeks and a total of 16 class units learning about, among other things, virtual welding, 3D CAD modelling, programming and the use of 3D printers.

According to Sándor Bodzás, Associate Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at DE MK, learning about the latest technologies and how to handle them is essential for students, as this industry is constantly and dynamically developing, and BMW's new training center is a great place for this.

“The first practical training of this kind was held last spring, when students learned metalworking and automotive skills in line with the Debrecen car manufacturer's training program. Since then, the program has been expanded to include electronics, 3D printing, automation and programming, among others, but there has also been a strong focus on 3D CAD modelling exercises such as virtual welding. The models designed in this way were also produced using 3D printers,“ said the associate professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering to hirek.unideb.hu.

Regarding simulators, Sándor Bodzás explained that this cost-effective and innovative method allows students to learn technical basics in a safe environment.

“Our cooperation with BMW has also led to a transformation of the training system at the Faculty of Technology. The focus of our training program is on practical skills, while modern technologies, especially manufacturing technology and robotics, have been integrated into the curriculum,” added István Erdei Timotei, a teaching assistant at DE MK.

The expert noted that the students of DE MK also carried out vehicle assembly tasks at the company's Training Center in Debrecen, the aim of which was to gain practical experience of the construction, operation and maintenance processes of individual vehicles. Since BMW announced the construction of its new factory in Debrecen, the number of applicants for DE MK's vehicle engineering course has increased significantly.
