Partnership for the successful use of AI in economics 06. May. 2025

The latest grant collaboration between the Faculty of Economics of the University of Debrecen (UD) and the Faculty of Economics of the University of Oradea aims to make AI (Artificial Intelligence)-based innovations available to economic actors and students in the counties of Bihor and Hajdú-Bihar, helping them to make more effective business decisions.

“We are trying to do our best to utilize the potential of AI both in the field of education and in research. Nevertheless, it continues to be important for us to encourage our students to use artificial intelligence based tools in a conscious way and for developing their competences. I do believe that it has never been possible to ‘hide’ from or stay out of technological progress and that the beneficiaries of these changes have always been those who have been the fastest to adapt to them. This is also going to be the case for AI. We need to prepare our students to graduate by having acquired the competences to use AI, because there is a growing demand for it in the labor market. This is also the objective of the joint program we have just launched,” said László Erdey at the kick-off event of the joint activities in Debrecen.
The Deputy Dean for International Relations at the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Debrecen believes that, without “deep” thinking and insight into processes, artificial intelligence is just a tool that can provide answers and generate automatisms that (will) require critical thinking to evaluate them.
The importance of cross-border cooperation in the project was emphasized by Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Oradea Dorin Cristian Coita and Associate Professor Laurentiu Droj. According to these experts, AI plays an increasingly important and unavoidable part in education, research and development. Therefore, it is the duty of academia to address it and deal with it. The aim of the program, coordinated by the University of Oradea, is to develop a comprehensive joint strategy in order to outline the possibilities for integrating AI in the fields of finance, accounting and business administration.
“This project provides a unique opportunity for us to put the most recent advances in AI into practice, connecting academic knowledge with business needs and demands. The chief objective is to ensure that both businesses and students in our region should benefit from the innovative solutions,” said Péter Bajnai, the project's coordinator in Debrecen.

The teaching assistant of the Institute of Accounting and Finance at the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Debrecen emphasized that the two universities would offer joint courses and workshops as well as provide state-of-the-art software and technologies for the practical application of AI. Within the framework of the project, there is also going to be a questionnaire survey conducted on the use of AI among companies in the regions concerned. The results and findings will be used to publish a number of academic papers while an e-book is also going to be produced, mainly on the financial applications of AI,” he added.

In the case of methodological courses on the potential applications of AI tools in finance, accounting and business administration, particular emphasis will be placed on the practical relevance of machine learning, deep learning and data modelling techniques.

At the project opening event, János Szenderák, who is an Assistant Professor at the Research Center for Social Science Coordination of the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Debrecen and István Füzesi, working as an Associate Professor at the Institute of Methodology and Business Digitalization, presented the courses to be implemented in Debrecen, where students would be able to learn the techniques of text and data mining while using software packages containing AI.
This project, which constitutes a partnership between the University of Debrecen and the University of Oradea, supports education, research and development while it is funded by Interreg VI-A Romania-Hungary Programme, under the project code ROHU00120 E2U-AI, entitled “Exchange of experience in the research and use of advanced AI techniques in the fields of finance, accounting and business administration in the Bihor-Hajdú-Bihar region.”
