Although the member institutions of the consortium, including the University of Debrecen (UD), are not located in the capital cities of their countries (but in the cities of Hamburg, Utrecht, Valencia, Turku, Porto and Glasgow), they are among the most important institutions of higher education in the respective countries in terms of student numbers and academic output.
The consortium holds a conference every two years at a different location to develop and discuss joint project ideas.
At this year's conference in Porto, the attending participants discussed current challenges in eleven Special Interest Groups (including Entrepreneurship and Business; Creativity, Arts and Media; Data Science and Artificial Intelligence; Food; Health; Pedagogy, Learning and Innovation; Societal Challenges; Smart Sustainable Cities; Sport and Exercise; Doctoral Education; and Computational Aided Engineering).
The University of Debrecen was represented at the event by several faculties (Faculty of Medicine; Faculty of Humanities; Faculty of Health Sciences; Faculty of Economics and Business; Faculty of Pharmacy; Faculty of Informatics; Faculty of Agriculture, Food Sciences and Environmental Management; Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Science and Technology) as well as central units (Innovation Ecosystem Center; International Office; Scientific Directorate) in a delegation of twenty-two individuals headed by László Csernoch, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs.
“There was an agreement reached at the meeting on the establishment of new thematic groups, which will provide an excellent opportunity for the researchers and academics of the University of Debrecen to continue their joint international scholarly-scientific work and to participate in responding to various calls for proposals. All this can prove to be helpful in developing university research networks and expanding current contacts. The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Switzerland was introduced to the consortium participants and has indicated its intention to join CARPE. The decision about this will be made at a later stage, following the submission of the official application documents,” said László Csernoch to hirek.unideb.hu.
The next CARPE conference will be held in the city of Utrecht, the Netherlands, in two years' time from now, in 2027.
