Debrecen’s pharmaceutical cluster takes a new direction 09. Dec. 2025

The members of Pharmapolis Debrecen Innovative Pharmaceutical Cluster, which was established in 2005, are the University of Debrecen, several pharmaceutical industry players, the local government of the city of Debrecen and the Hajdú-Bihar County Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Their main goal is to promote industrial networking through cooperation and by relying on the features of this region as well as to continue research and development, primarily in the field of clinical drug research.

At the Pharmapolis general meeting, Zoltán Szilvássy, rector of the University of Debrecen and president of the cluster, recalled that, at the beginning of the 1900s, several pharmaceutical companies were established in our country, and quite a few of these companies were founded in Debrecen. Between 1920 and 1940, Hungary ranked sixth in the world in pharmaceutical production and distribution, while today we are ranked only 19th in Europe. As a consequence of the privatization of factories in the 1990s, the national pharmaceutical industry almost completely disappeared.

The fact that such clusters are being established is both a responsibility and an incredible opportunity for us. It is an unmistakable signal that this country has the potential to advance in this industry,” said Zoltán Szilvássy.

The rector of the university reminded the participants of the general meeting that, when Pharmapolis was established, it was with Richter Pharmaceuticals that UD established a close connection, the focus areas of which were cell therapy, stress protein-based drug development and molecular imaging. The organization was then joined by several minor small and medium-sized companies, which have developed quite much since then.

According to Zoltán Bács, Chancellor of the University of Debrecen, after the stability of the early years, the recent past period in the life of Pharmapolis have been spent in the spirit of trying to find the right path forward.

- I do hope that from now on, however, the organization will gain new momentum. One of the most important tasks for moving forward will be to obtain the title of innovative cluster. I also hope that, together with you, we will be able to achieve great results in the new era- said Zoltán Bács.

One of the vice presidents of the cluster, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy of UD Ildikó Bácskay, underlined that one of their most important tasks will be to create a competency map, which will be of substantial help when applying for international tender funding.

She highlighted that the University of Debrecen, which has developed impressively, is now capable of developing a measurement-and-service portfolio together with its industrial partners, since the necessary instruments and equipment required are now available for this.

- Only if we continuously develop our teaching materials, can we provide our students with quality knowledge. For this purpose, we need to receive feedback from those who will employ these young people. However, it is difficult to meet these expectations, because medical and health sciences are the most information-sensitive disciplines, a feature that is not easy to follow with education- said Ildikó Bácskay.

At the next stage of the general meeting, Tamás Dékán, Managing Director of Hungarian Sport- and Lifestyle Development Cluster, presented the conditions for cluster assessment, while Tamás Bene, Managing Director and Expert of UD Research Utilization and Technology Transfer Center, gave a presentation on intellectual property protection applied in the pharmaceutical industry.

At the end of the meeting, there was an election of the senior officials of Pharmapolis Debrecen Innovative Pharmaceutical Cluster. Zoltán Szilvássy, Rector of UD, was reelected as the president of the cluster, while one of the vice-presidential positions is going to be held by Dávid Greskovits, Managing Director of Meditop Pharmaceutical Industry Kft., and the other one by Ildikó Bácskay, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at UD.
