A decisive factor for the professor from South Dakota State University while choosing the destination for his scholarship was the fact that the two institutions had already signed a dual degree agreement. The focus of his fields of interest and research is genetic and genomic studies of beef cattle and bison, with particular emphasis on immunogenetics, feed utilization and bison genome exploration.
- I do believe that the University of Debrecen is an excellent location for me to expand scientific relations and to lay the foundations for joint research. I have also become involved in master's and doctoral programs in the field of education with the hope of helping students advance their careers. In addition, the joint scientific work in a project with István Komlósi, Head of the Doctoral School of Animal Sciences, will create opportunities for future joint genetic analyses involving MSc and PhD students- said Michael Gonda to hirek.unideb.hu.
The South Dakota State University professor spoke particularly highly of the preparedness and professional attitude of the PhD students at UD.
- These students are great, enthusiastic, and hard-working. I hardly see any difference between the students at the University of Debrecen and those at SDSU. Both of them are talented, motivated and respectful towards each other. So, the time I spend at the University of Debrecen is extremely valuable to me, both from a personal and a professional aspect- said Michael Gonda.
The professor underlined that the experiences he has gained here have also shaped his thinking as a researcher to a significant degree. He has noticed that the University of Debrecen is committed to put particular emphasis on the genetic preservation of indigenous species, an approach he considers to be of great value and one that he would take back with him to the United States.
- There are other scientists who think in a different way and also approach problems differently. I have learned a lot about and from these different perspectives. Thus, I believe that cooperation is essential for the advancement of research. In sum, I am really proud to have been a lecturer at the University of Debrecen, even if it is only for a short time. I feel that a shared passion for agriculture can and does connect people, regardless of where they come from- he added.
Professor Michael Gonda will be working at the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management at the University of Debrecen until the end of December, following which he will return to South Dakota State University. However, he will continue to pursue joint scientific research and to work on expanding cooperation related to a dual degree program in precision agricultural engineering.
