New impulses to be triggered by the capital of jazz music 11. Dec. 2025

It was in 2023 that the Institute of Pop Music at the University of Debrecen launched the first pop(ular) music bachelor's program in Hungary, providing a niche for those who wish to earn a degree in this field. The first class will graduate and receive their diplomas next summer, making 2026 a special year for the institute. Over the course of the past three years, this program has gained quite a significant amount of professional experience. There have been more and more renowned experts joining the teaching staff, and the program has consequently won well-deserved popularity, which can also be seen in the admission results.

Due to the steadily growing number of students, the excellent teaching staff and the extremely varied and rich range of courses on offer, this bachelor's program enjoys increasing prestige both at home and internationally. The University of Debrecen has established close links with a number of other educational institutions around the world, thus providing students with the opportunity to get significant professional experience in all fields of arts and sciences. This is also true for music and, specifically, for the highly popular contemporary pop music program.

Joint work and cooperation in this field is also possible as, according to information from the institute, one of their students in the program will soon be able to acquire valuable professional experience overseas.

Anna Zsófia Nagy, a student majoring in contemporary pop music at the University of Debrecen, has been given a unique opportunity to study abroad at Loyola University in New Orleans, the capital city of jazz, for five months through an International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) scholarship, thanks to the assistance of the International Office of UD.

Ákos Tóth, Deputy Director of the Institute of Pop Music and Faculty Director for Innovation, Education and International Relations at the Faculty of Music, is confident that Anna Zsófia Nagy is going to stay at the best place for her professional development, as New Orleans has produced legendary musicians and is a source of inspiration for all artists with its iconic clubs and vibrant cultural life.

- Our program is still very young, yet we try to do our best to strengthen the extensive international network of contacts of the University of Debrecen. At the institutional level, our primary goal is to make progress in this area as well. In any case, taking such a role requires a high degree of openness on the part of the student, which Anna Zsófia Nagy is fully in possession of. It is the scholarship program that provides an institutional connection with the US university. Our student has applied for this opportunity, and we have tried to help her find an institution where she could enroll without having to postpone her studies in Debrecen. As regards our own training system, we have tried to create a professional program that is in line with international trends, so we completely accept the credits earned at the North-American university in our domestic training. Anna Zsófia Nagy could be an excellent example of how it is possible to get from Debrecen to the United States and then come back home to continue studying here, thus enriching the field of pop music in Hungary. We are quite certain that she will return home having acquired unforgettable experiences, a vast knowledge of music and a lot of new impulses, which may even prove to be a path for her peers to follow- said the Faculty Director.

So far, the Institute of Pop Music at the University of Debrecen has established a partnership with Codarts University in Rotterdam in the field of popular music, but the staff members of the institute are intent on seeking out other institutions with the appropriate infrastructure and accredited university programs for partnering.
